Sem 2: Batch #5 - A Lot and Lot of Performances (Uptown Funk, 起床歌 & Begin Again)

Hello! Summer has officially officially started and I had an amazing time up on 中橫! I was debating with myself whether or not I should break my chain of nostalgic Sem 2 posts and blog about 中橫 while it was fresh in my mind, but then I uploaded the photos to Facebook already and if I blogged about it I would only be adding detail to my favourite moments.

(That was me persuading myself to not break the Sem 2 posts, btw) Therefore I shall resume.

The next thing that happened after Bicycle day was 社博 (Club Exhibition) and 期初社大 which roughly roughly translates to: Club Presentation at the Starting of the Semester. We had a stall during club exhibition and also a mini stage where we did 20 minute sessions. Besides that, we accepted a gig on a bigger stage, where we dressed up and everything (well, I did anyway). It's a little complicated haha, but it only shows how busy I was during that week. I had more than ten songs to learn and perform. But it was worth it.

I was going through the photos of 社博 and I found that because I passed my camera to other people, it was filled with photos I didn't take. And because my portrait lens' focus is controlled manually, most of the photos were out of focus or the lighting was weird haha. So I'll just choose the best.

It was really fun, performing on such an intimate stage, we were situated at the entrance of the exhibition so there were a constant stream of people passing by, but all they did was just pass by, hahaha. It was a challenge to see how well one could grab the attention of people wandering nearby. I still need more practice, obviously.

Besides performing, we had to hand out flyers and basically promote our club. I know this sounds weird, but I honestly like chatting with strangers.

Day two of 社博 we had the scheduled performance on the big stage. It's called 動態舞台 Action Stage (?) and I performed with Linus, Xuncheng and BJ. We did a set of three songs, the last one being Uptown Funk. As I don't have the ability to play guitar that well, I played the melodica and ukulele. I honestly really liked our performance that day. It was cute and my melodica arrangement was spot one hehe.

Setlist:
3. Uptown Funk by Mark Ronson ft. Bruno Mars

And behold, some badly taken phone photos. Front camera photos are absolutely horrible.

Compiling photos is such hard work, and I always start these posts with such enthusiasm but then it starts to bleed out as my laptop refuses to cooperate. So halfway through these posts I start to lose patience and then I rush to the ending. Which is exactly what I'm doing now.

期初社大 is a full performance, with different bands from Minyaotuan in the club. But that's just how our club ikes to do it. The other clubs here in NCKU all do different things as the purpose of this presentation is to attract people into our club.

I was super excited for my first ever 期初社大 in which I had a chance of performing in. Besides that, I was also the emcee for the event. Before the semester even started, I had already picked out the song I wanted to cover. I wasn't even in Taiwan when I picked out that song. Enthusiastic Noel is slightly terrifying.

And I was also asked to be the lead singer for another song. A Taylor Swift song, Begin Again. But because the weather was extremely unstable (it dropped to 16 degrees), it took a toll on my voice. I couldn't control my voice they way I liked it and it made me sound like a duck.

This is 起床歌 by 曹格 Gary Cao, he's Malaysian and I really love the bluesy, big band vibe of the original song. We wrote a little something at the starting of the song, as a contrast to the happy upbeat feel when we go into the verse.

Lyrics:

I'm pretty sure there are two swear words in it but my Taiwanese friends assure me there isn't.

I don't really like Begin Again, to be honest, cause I just don't feel as strongly for the song as I do for 起床歌 but everyone told me they liked Begin Again better. Ah well.

Below are some of my favourite photos of the event

Okay, I'm sure there are plenty of photos on this post now.

I'll leave ya'll with this video of me dancing to Uptown Funk

Here's To 19

You may or may not know, but I decided to hide my birthday on Facebook this year. The main reason being I wanted to experiment on my new friend in uni, see if they remembered (I did tell them a few months ago) instead of  only relying on Facebook's notification.

And I was honestly very surprised to find that a lot of my closest friends remembered! This proves that people actually care.  Mostly people only started wishing me after seeing my mother's birthday post (it has more than 150 likes now, wtf) on my wall, so at the beginning of my day, a bunch of aunties and uncles (whom I've never met) started wishing me. It was actually kinda cute haha

Anyway, I'm really grateful for all the wishes, especially the videos I received. I'll post a few soon. But first of all, I wrote a song for my nineteenth year. It's not exactly an original, but that's what I felt like writing haha.

Lyrics:
I remember
In early September
Arrived in Tainan
With my dreams and plans

Started university
Caught up in activities
And suddenly
I find I'm 19

Happy birthday to me

Remembering 18
I proclaimed myself Queen
Dyed my hair red
But I was still slightly green

Now I'm 19
All the places I've been
The faces I've seen
My hair is actually kinda green

Happy birthday to me
Happy birthday dear Noel
Happy birthday to me

I would honestly like to thank my parents, eventhough we can't celebrate together this year, they made sure I was still treated like a princess :)

I didn't actually celebrate grandly like the previous years, all I did was to go out and makan with my brother. Here are some of the photos of the night.

Food was good and my brother belanja me so everything was well hehe.

Also in the afternoon I was chilling in our GuitarOffice and my friends gave me a kawaii cake haha. Kevin gave me a bubble blower too. It was extremely random.

My friends are so adorable haha

Speaking of adorable friends, my Homosapiens with Boobs made a video for me! It was filled with my snapchats and their love. Also filled with copyrighted material. Yiwen tried to upload it to many places but got blocked off so we spent three hours during midnight fussing over technology just to let me see the video. Her data even ran out halfway through. I love Yiwen.

And then another cute video I received was from my friends who were climbing Yushan (Jade Mountain), the highest peak in Taiwan. The video is honestly so adorable, listen closely to the other people speaking in the video. And they obviously didn't plan this, so when they suddenly started to sing the birthday song, their faces were so hilarious.

It made me very happy

Then after dinner, Xuncheng jio me out. Turns out he wrote a song for me. It was a song we wrote when we graduated from New Minyaotuan and he upgraded it. It's really nice, although you can hear me try (and fail) at harmonizing to this song haha. They lyrics are in Chinese and I damn lazy to translate lah, so just enjoy k

Lyrics:

Of course, I can't forget all those cute and random DM's that I received, there are reasons I'm friends with all my friends. And through those DMs I remember why.

I guess, being 19 looks like it's going to be a hell of a ride :)

Thank you for being a part of it.

Soul Seller - BJ & Co.

I hope ya'll like my Music Covers Page. Because I suppose that is what will be constantly updated on this blog once I finish a performance/competition.

Wow. That did't start this post well.

Song: Soul Seller
Singer/Band: BJ & Co.
Album: They (we?) actually wrote this song for the annual 'National Universities Intercollegiate Guitar Music Invitational' or more commonly known as The Guitar Cup

Released: 19th January 2015 (The day of the competition)
Genre: Alternative acoustic-rock (?)

There isn't a cover art but this will do
Lyrics:

In a busy day ,there's a busy man
In this crazy world, he always walks alone
He has nowhere to go .He says he is the soul seller
He has nowhere to go. He’s just a soul seller

(Woo)
There's a busy man
He always walks alone
(Hahahahaha)
He says he is the soul seller
But all I see is nothing but a traveler

Walking on the street,in this crowded city.
Maybe you can see a man singing to the shadows.
He’ll give you everything ,And you don’t need to pay
Do not fear the cost ‘cause it’ll come eventually
And sometimes ,you should know
When he uses up all his soul.
He will die again, again like you.

(Woo)
There's a man like the mist
Singing a song, try’na let us know.
Listen listen listen
he says he is the soul seller
what is the soul seller?

*Chorus*
I’ll be the star
Guiding your way
Feel the presence of your soul
I can rid you of your hollowness

Just follow the sign
Don't suspend your steps
It’s seems like nothing’s there
Cause your mind is much hollow

In a busy day ,there's a busy man
In this crazy world, he’s still walks alone
But he knows where to go, cause he is the soul seller
He knows where to go. He’s just a soul seller

(Woo)
There's a busy man
He always walked alone
(Hahahahaha)
We will carry on singing his ballad
(Woo)
A never ending song.

*Chorus*

Oh yeah I’m the soul seller

Just follow the rhythm like I'm a piper
I will lead you in a timeless dance
And you will become a soul seller
Igniting sparks among sleeping hearts
Jolting them awake from their soulless shells

Noel's Lyric Interpretation:
Hi. I don't see how I can interpret the lyrics for you. You see, I've been told many times about the story behind this song, but I never really seemed to get it. I pretend that I do, to please the dude who wrote the melody and the backbone of the song (his name is BJ ((not joking k)) and he's the tallest singer in the video), but I honestly don't.

Mainly because he chose the words 'Soul Seller' for this song. I mean, legit. Where is your soul? But then he starts ranting about how the soul is a metaphor for ideas, opinions, and basically thought. And how that we all are soul sellers and we are supposed to spread the idea and inspire. But him being a typical Taiwanese, couldn't write English for a dollar's worth. I'm not being high and mighty (God knows how many grammar mistakes I've made on this blog alone), but when I read the first English draft of the song, I pulled him aside and told him I had to fix his grammar and vocabulary mistakes before I lost my mind. I suppose that's how I got involved in this song. Me, being a freshman, involved in a national competition? Absolutely unheard of. But then again, the whole club's English level needs work.

I supposed I approached him too early because he told he was consult Teacher Noel sooner or later (I swear the whole guitar club calls me that when I correct their pronunciation and grammar). Perhaps I should have waited a little longer but horrid grammar makes my toes curl in agony.

So I fixed the lyrics. There are still some parts I find grammatically incorrect and nonsensical but BJ refused to change and I couldn't find a better substitute, can you spot them? And during their pre-competition meeting, all the seniors shut up about the lyrics when BJ mentioned I already fixed it. Before that, they couldn't stop picking the bones of his lyrics hahaha.

But to tell you the truth. I absolutely love this song. The melody is simply haunting, and the idea behind the song is actually quite good. I love how the song gives an image of a busy market in my mind. I can't believe I took part in this song, even though I was just being a Grammar Nazi.

I told BJ I was going to write a short story based on this song, cos the image in my mind was just too vivid, too malleable. But I suppose he got caught up with the idea and he kept feeding me his ideas and he expanded his universe to something like the Lord Of The Rings, cause we watched The Hobbit before we fixed the lyrics. I'm probably just going to stick with a short story.

Oh oh oh! I almost left out the most important bit! THE SONG GOT 6TH PLACE IN THE SONGWRITING CATEGORY OF THE COMPETITION. I'm sososososososooso proud. I was only like a speck of dust in the production of this song but I'm still bursting with pride. I'm not even sure why. I just love this song so much. I think it deserved better results but alas, Taiwan is a mandarin-centered country, many people question my presence there, I suppose an English song will not shine as bright and touch as many people as a Mandarin song.

I've been shoving this song in many of my friends' faces recently. And I'm not done yet. I can't get over how good this song is and I'm just proud proud proud. I wish that I will be able to write songs as good as this in the future. Soon. Soon. Soon.

Noel's Lyric Interpretation:
This is a pretty simple song telling you how simple love is. We didn't really change much of the song except for the guitar solo. You can say it's a little more chill than the original but meanwhile it's not as chill as the dougie version.

Hello hello hello hello hello. I'm not exactly back. Joyanne demanded me post this to my blog so here you have it.

I should probably introduce my bandmates cos they're all really talented people. From the left, 勳承, Xun Cheng aka Cockroachman (I actually christianed him Vincent but he doesn't seem to buy into that name), he's really good on guitar and his voice is deep and husky (he's annoying tho). Next on, 巧思, Sarah Pan, she's SUCH A CUTIEPIE, like legit the sweetest person ever, even her voice feels like it's candy-coated. And on my left,  奕融, Allan, he's really sweet and nice too and his voice is somewhere between husky and phlegmy (???) but his harmonization is usually on point. They're all really good people and I'm so happy to be able to be in a band together with them.

I don't really think I should apologize for being MIA because I honestly have been busy just living. If you truly want to know about my daily shenanigans, you should follow me on instagram (@noelhasfeathers) which update when something interesting happens.

I really really really really want to tell you all about NCKU's guitar club and the exclusive group I auditioned for (minyaotuan) but I REALLY DON'T HAVE TIME. My studies and my social life are dangling on a line here.

However, I will try to post as many of my performances here because well, I don't really have any other place to show them off.

So bye for now.

Noel's Lyric Interpretation:
Obviously I don't need to interpret the lyrics. What with all the "I miss you so bad"s. So I guess I wanted to let you guys know how me and Joy interpreted this song... Musically. So here's how it goes. If you've heard the original song, you know it starts off with this riff that is so addictive, and you also know that Noel can't play that because she sucks at practicing. It also continues with lots and lots of drum bashing which is so upbeat and happy eventhough they miss each other so bad. So we decided to slow it down and do a chill cover. Obvs, with my new baby Jewel (yes, I named my uke Jewel),

Noel's Lyric Interpretation:
The lyrics of this song are written in 'Manglish' according to a website. But no, sweets. It's not. It's a mixture of Malay and English. Basically the lyrics are about the singer's boyfriend who is cheating on her. He's a liar, a cheater and completely shameless. And at the bridge, the singer expresses how she feels about this which is: nuh-uh *head shake* Then towards the end, there is a twist! Turns out the girl the boy was cheating with was cheating on him too, WITH HIS BEST FRIEND TOMMY. KANTOI! (This word basically means: Caught red-handed, which is... Well, the whole song summed up.)

I really love this song. The folk, jazzy feel of this song gives you a I've-Had-Enough-of-Your-Sh*t-Good-Riddance-You-Cheating-Sucker feel. And I think the twist in the end makes it perfect, showcasing how karma bites you in the ass. Zee Avi is really a talented songwriter, being able to tell a story in a carefree song. I can't even write an interesting novel jeez.

Who i s Zee Avi? Only one of the most talented Malaysian musicians that's who. Actually, you don't need to know who she is. You need to listen. Her voice is just heaven.
Here's me trying to be Zee Avi. Ada feel tak?

I suppose no one requested this song. I just figured it sounded nice with my voice (no high notes yes) and decided to play my guitar which has been silently collecting dust under my bed.

And I've tried recording myself for the other songs people have requested like: Every Chance We Get We Run - David Guetta, Home - Gabrielle Aplin, Rock N' Roll - Avril Lavigne... It's hard to practice and then sing and then record y'know. Especially when I'm doing it all by myself. And it's even worse because I don't sound good. I can't sing. I just like to.

And I apologize for not writing anything recently. But every time I open my drafts, I stare at the points I've jotted down, the ideas that sounded so good in my head. And I just hit against this huge brick wall. It's not a writer's block. It's just that I lost my ladder to climb the wall. And I'll find it soon. I just need a little bit of time to let my thoughts drift.

I suddenly realize that I am terribly vain.

Oh well.

I Youtube too.
